BFMTV reported that France has announced the expulsion of 12 Algerian diplomats and consular staff and the recall of its ambassador to Algeria.
Diplomatic tensions between France and Algeria escalated after Algeria declared 12 French Interior Ministry employees persona non grata and gave them 48 hours to leave the country.
The Elysee Palace called Algeria's actions "unjustified and incomprehensible," accusing them of a sharp deterioration in bilateral relations.
Algeria, in turn, called its decision "sovereign" and accused French Interior Minister Bruno Retayo of exacerbating the situation. Retayo, who advocates a strict migration policy, has denied any involvement in the case, which is being investigated by French justice.
