Floods and storms in Europe have affected more than 400,000 people

In 2024, Europe was hit by devastating storms and floods that “affected” 413,000 people. According to a report on the state of Europe’s climate, fossil fuel pollution has made the continent a record hot spot, writes The Guardian.

Last year, cars were seen stranded in flooded streets and bridges collapsed due to torrential rains in various countries across the continent. 30% of Europe’s river network was affected by “high” floods, and 12% exceeded the “severe” flood threshold.

The most devastating events were recorded in September in Central Europe and in October in Eastern Spain, which killed more than 250 people.

Previous studies have shown that these disasters have become more severe and more likely due to global warming.
