Arrested Istanbul mayor made honorary citizen of Paris

The French newspaper Figaro reported that Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who was previously arrested and whose powers as mayor were suspended, has been made an honorary citizen of Paris.

“Ekrem Imamoglu is today unjustly deprived of the opportunity to represent his party and the votes of millions of Turks. He must feel the full support of Paris,” said Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo.

According to Hidalgo, such support “could allow the current Turkish government to hear the voices of democratic reason.”

It is noted that this decision was unanimously adopted at a meeting of the Paris City Council.

Recall that on March 19, Istanbul Mayor Imamoglu was arrested on suspicion of corruption.
