Why is Russia not on the tariff list?

US President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on many countries worldwide, including Ukraine and Israel, with a minimum rate of 10 percent.

It is noteworthy that Russia, North Korea, Cuba, and Belarus were excluded from the list of tariffs. The US already has sanctions against these countries, and “the scale of trade is not significant,” White House press secretary Caroline Levitt told Axios.

The magazine also notes that the United States trades more with Russia than with some smaller countries on the tariff list, including Mauritius and Brunei.

According to Levitt, Russia could still face “additional severe sanctions.”

Canada and Mexico were also removed from Trump’s list. The press secretary confirmed this happened because Trump had already imposed 25% tariffs on the two countries.

It should be noted that the volume of trade between the United States and Russia has fallen sharply, from about $35 billion in 2021 to $3.5 billion.
