The Democratic nominee for the Wisconsin Supreme Court has defeated a challenger backed by President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk.
Susan Crawford, a Dane County judge who has fought for union rights, abortion rights, and voter ID laws, took the stage with four current liberal justices. She described her victory as a victory for democracy while criticizing Musk.
“I never imagined I would be running against the richest man in the world for justice in Wisconsin. And we won,” Crawford said.
Musk and the groups he funded spent over $21 million to defeat Crawford. Two days before the election, Musk personally visited Wisconsin to hand out $1 million checks to two voters.
“Today, the people of Wisconsin have repelled an unprecedented attack on our democracy, our fair elections, and our Supreme Court,” Crawford said in his victory speech.
Crawford defeated Republican nominee Brad Schimmel, who set spending records, became the highest-turnout candidate in Wisconsin’s Supreme Court race, and has become a symbol of the national political struggle.
