Batumi Muslims want a new mosque, but authorities reject it

Muslims in Batumi have reminded the authorities of the need for a new mosque.

Eid al-Fitr prayers were held near the Orta Jame Mosque on Kutaisi Street in Batumi, marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Since the old mosque cannot accommodate all the faithful, and the municipality refuses to issue a permit for the construction of a new mosque, the Muslim community was once again forced to pray on the street, Netgazeti reports.

After the prayer, Mufti of Western Georgia Adam Shantadze, in the presence of Batumi Mayor Archil Chikovani, stressed the need to build a new mosque and religious institution in the city, expressing hope that the authorities will support the faithful in resolving this issue.
