US Secretary of State asks for Turkey's support for peace in the Caucasus

The US State Department has released details of Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

They discussed cooperation on important security and trade issues.

“The Secretary requested Turkey’s support for peace in Ukraine and the South Caucasus. He appreciated Turkey’s leadership in the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS. He reaffirmed the need for close cooperation to ensure a stable, united, and peaceful Syria that is not a haven for international terrorism or a corridor for destabilizing Iranian activity.

The Secretary also noted recent progress in bilateral trade and encouraged further expansion of the economic partnership.

At the same time, the US Secretary of State expressed concern about recent arrests and protests in Turkey,” the statement said.
