Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had an optimistic, significant, and frank conversation with US President Donald Trump.
“We agreed that Ukraine and the United States should continue to work together to achieve a real end to the war and a sustainable peace. We believe that with the help of the United States, President Trump, and the American leadership, we can achieve sustainable peace this year,” Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian president emphasized that President Trump shared the details of his phone conversation with Putin and the key issues discussed. According to him, one of the first steps towards a complete end to the war could be the cessation of attacks on energy and other civilian infrastructure.
“I supported this step; we are ready to implement it. Our teams discussed this step in Jeddah. The American side also proposed an unconditional ceasefire on the front line, and Ukraine also accepted this proposal. We will continue to work to make this happen. Such steps are necessary to create an opportunity to prepare a comprehensive peace agreement during the ceasefire,” Zelensky stressed.
According to him, during the phone conversation, he presented Trump with the situation on the battlefield and the impact of Russian strikes. They talked about the situation in the Kursk region and touched upon the issue of the release of prisoners of war and the return of Ukrainian children captured by Russian troops.
“We also discussed Ukraine’s air defense and the possibility of strengthening it to protect people’s lives. We have instructed our teams to resolve technical issues regarding implementing and expanding the partial ceasefire. Ukrainian and American teams are ready to meet in Saudi Arabia in the coming days to continue coordinating steps toward peace. We have instructed our advisers and representatives to do this work quickly. In the next meetings, the teams can agree on all the necessary aspects to move towards sustainable peace and security guarantees,” Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian president added that he thanked President Trump and the American people for their support. “I emphasized that the Ukrainians want peace, so Ukraine accepted the unconditional ceasefire proposal. I emphasized the importance of President Trump’s concept of peace through strength. We agreed to maintain constant contact, including at the highest level and through our teams,” Zelensky concluded.
