US President Donald Trump will sign an executive order on Thursday to dismantle the Department of Education, Reuters reports.
Before signing, the order was challenged by a group of Democratic state attorneys general, who filed a lawsuit seeking to block Trump from dismantling the department.
The NAACP, a leading civil rights organization, also condemned the pending decision, calling it unconstitutional.
“This is a dark day for millions of American children who depend on federal funding for a quality education,” said NAACP President Derrick Johnson. He also recalled that the votes of many parents living in poor and rural communities contributed to Trump’s victory.
