Saakashvili will remain in prison until 2034

The third president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, was found guilty of illegally crossing the state border. The verdict was published today by the Tbilisi City Court. He was sentenced to four years and six months in prison.

Since the Georgian courts have already sentenced Mikheil Saakashvili to 9 years in prison, Judge Jinjolia announced that the third president of Georgia will ultimately serve 12 years and 6 months in jail.

“This verdict [the term in the illegal border crossing case] is partially added to the sentence imposed by the Tbilisi City Court on March 12, 2025, for a term of 8 years. As a result, by combining the verdicts, Mikheil Saakashvili is sentenced to a final term of 12 years and 6 months in prison,” Judge Mikheil Jinjolia announced.

According to the verdict, Mikheil Saakashvili will remain imprisoned until April 1, 2034.

It should be recalled that the wanted former president of Georgia arrived in the country on September 29, 2021, and was arrested on October 1. A criminal case has been initiated against him under Article 344 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (illegally crossing the state border).

Before returning to Georgia, Saakashvili was sentenced to imprisonment in absentia in two cases: pardoning the killers of Sandro Girgvliani and beating MP Valeri Gelashvili. At the same time, trials against him, such as the one against him on November 7, 2007, are ongoing.

In addition, the Georgian Dream Party has established an investigative committee in parliament to investigate crimes committed during the rule of the United National Movement.
