Rings of inversion trails left by an airplane have appeared in the sky over Budapest. Residents of the Hungarian capital noticed the unusual phenomenon this afternoon. Levon Azizyan, director of the Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center (SNCO), wrote about it.
“What is an inversion trail? An inversion trail occurs when warm air from an airplane’s engines mixes with cold air at altitudes where the ambient temperature is below zero. It is a visible air trail of condensed moisture (droplets or ice crystals).
Not all airplanes leave trails; for example, Airbus A340 engines do, but Boeing 707 engines do not, although both fly at an altitude of 10,000 meters.”
