Germany should discuss the joint use of nuclear weapons with France and the United Kingdom.
This was stated by the potential future Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, in an interview with Deutschlandfunk, who answered whether the country should participate in nuclear deterrence with France in the future. According to him, this should complement, not replace, the American nuclear umbrella.
“We simply need to strengthen together in Europe regarding nuclear defense. And that is why I discussed this with Emmanuel Macron in Paris last week. Now we want to start by coordinating our ideas with each other,” he said.
At the same time, the politician emphasized that Germany itself cannot and should not have nuclear weapons, since this is prohibited by at least two treaties.
“The latest is the 1990 “two plus four” treaty, in which Germany clearly refused to have nuclear weapons. And that will remain in force,” Merz emphasized.
