Italy changes course: nuclear power plants will be built in the country

Italy is bringing nuclear power back to the country almost three decades after it was phased out. The government intends to resume its use by 2030 to ensure energy security and achieve ambitious decarbonization targets.

Environment and Energy Security Minister Gilberto Picchetto Frattini reaffirmed the government's commitment: "I am convinced that by 2030, we will have nuclear energy in Italy."

The Italian government approved a nuclear energy recovery plan on Friday, reversing the anti-nuclear stance enshrined in referendums in 1987 and 2011.

The share of nuclear energy in the country's energy supply is expected to reach 11-22% by 2050.

The strategy aims to develop advanced technologies, including small modular reactors (SMRs), microreactors, and fourth-generation nuclear technologies.
