President Donald Trump said a $100 billion investment by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) will give the United States control of nearly 40 percent of the global microchip market.
"We used to have a big (share-gr.) with Intel, but now we have very little, and we're going to be close to 40 percent of the market with this deal and a few other deals that we're doing. It's a huge leap," he said at the White House, commenting on TSMC's $100 billion investment in the US economy.
TSMC, the world's largest chipmaker, first invested in US manufacturing in 2020, providing funds for a $12 billion factory in Arizona. The company has since expanded its plans.
According to The Wall Street Journal, TSMC will be the first to bring advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology, previously used only in Taiwan, to the United States. The company's chips are critical for artificial intelligence technologies, smartphones, and other advanced electronics.
