"We're not telling NATO to mind its own business; we're telling it to do more." Rubio

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has referred to Friedrich Merz's statements that Europe should create an independent defense force, which indicates a weakening of trust in NATO.

The Secretary of State has dismissed such concerns, emphasizing that NATO is not under threat but that European allies must do more.

"The only thing that puts NATO at risk is that we have NATO allies who have almost no military forces or whose military forces are not very effective because they have spent 40 years without spending any money on it," Rubio said.

"We are not saying, mind your own business. We are saying, do more. This is their continent. Why is it wrong for the United States to ask wealthy European countries to invest more in their national security?" the US Secretary of State emphasized.
