Friedrich Merz has said he will support Europe in achieving “real independence” from the United States.
However, as Reuters notes, Merz will have to conduct complex and lengthy coalition negotiations to achieve this goal, especially after the far-right Alternative for Germany party recently took a historic second place in the elections.
“We are under enormous pressure from both sides, so my absolute priority is to achieve unity in Europe. Creating unity in Europe is possible,” he said.
Merz noted that Trump has shown that his administration is “basically indifferent to the fate of Europe.”
“It will be an absolute priority, as soon as possible, to strengthen Europe so that we can gradually achieve real independence from the United States,” he concluded.
