The official preliminary results of the German Bundestag elections have been announced. According to them, the conservative CDU/CSU (Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union) alliance led by Friedrich Merz won the snap election, receiving 28.6% of the vote, writes DW.
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is in second place with 20.8%, and the center-left Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) is in third place with 16.4%. The left-liberal Alliance 90/The Greens also entered parliament with 11.6%, and the Left Party with 8.8%.
Meanwhile, the liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the left-wing Sarah Wagenknecht Alliance (SVD) failed to pass the 5% threshold required to enter parliament. The FDP received 4.3% of the vote, while the SVD received 4.972%.
No single party formed a government, so the CDU/CSU and SPD parties will have to negotiate a coalition.
