On the day that US President Donald Trump spoke with Vladimir Putin on the phone, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent arrived in Kyiv.
He presented Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with a document stating that the United States would acquire half of the Ukrainian mineral resources.
This was reported to NBC News by well-informed American officials.
It is noted that Zelensky demanded that Bessent give him time to study the document in detail. The US Treasury Secretary said that he had one hour to sign it; otherwise, the upcoming meetings with US Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio would be canceled.
According to sources, Bessent explained to Zelensky that the agreement with the Trump administration on rare earth minerals is key to building a strategic partnership between the US and Ukraine. He assured the Ukrainian president that this would contribute to Kyiv's security guarantees after the end of the war.
The newspaper noted that Zelensky refused to sign the document. Therefore, the Ukrainian president's team was informed that the meetings with Vance and Rubio were postponed, but they nevertheless took place later.
