US defense budget to be cut by 8%

According to a new memo obtained by CNN, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered plans to slash the military budget over the next five years, excluding border security programs.

The dated order calls on military leaders to submit proposals to reduce the annual budget by 8% over the next five years. Proposals for a massive cut of about $850 billion in the Pentagon budget must be submitted by February 24.

The order comes as Trump and the Department of Homeland Security have launched a significant effort to shrink the federal government, cut costs, and lay off many workers nationwide.

The Pentagon's proposed cuts of about $850 billion would be the largest ever in the Department's budget.
