Cultural heritage sites are being restored in Syria (PHOTOS)

Experts are returning to Syria’s war-ravaged cultural heritage sites in hopes of starting to rebuild them, the Associated Press reports. That could significantly boost the country’s economy, which was devastated by nearly 14 years of war.

Once-thriving landmarks like the ancient city of Palmyra and the medieval fortress of Crac des Chevaliers are still in ruins. Despite this, local tourists are returning to the sites. Syria hopes its historical and cultural significance will eventually attract foreign tourists.
