157 whales found on Australian beach (PHOTOS)

The Australian Department of Natural Resources and Environment has said 157 whales have been found stranded on the Arthur River in northwestern Tasmania.

The adverse ocean and weather conditions that have hampered the rescue of the whales are expected to persist for several days.

Marine biologist Chris Carlaion said the survivors would be euthanized. “The longer these animals are left unattended, the longer they suffer. Unfortunately, all the alternatives have failed,” he said.

The department had said 136 survivors had been found, but a few hours later, that figure was revised to 90.

The young whales weighed 500 kilograms, while the adults weighed 3.3 tonnes. The dead whales will be examined for scientific research.

The reasons for the stranding are unclear. Causes can include disorientation caused by loud noises, illness, injury, escape from predators, and severe weather conditions.
