Egypt is preparing a rehabilitation plan for the Gaza Strip that would exclude the expulsion of the local population, as proposed by US President Donald Trump, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has announced.
According to Al-Ahram, the plan calls for the creation of “safe zones” inside Gaza where Palestinians can temporarily live while Egyptian and international companies rebuild the region’s infrastructure.
Key aspects of the Egyptian initiative:
Transitional governance: Creating a Palestinian administration not affiliated with Hamas or the Palestinian Authority.
Security: Forming a Palestinian police force from former law enforcement officers trained in Egypt and the West.
Phases of rehabilitation: A three-phase process over five years, starting with a six-month “early rehabilitation,” during which Palestinians will be housed in mobile shelters with access to humanitarian aid.
France and Germany have backed the Egyptian initiative, and the foreign ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and Jordan will discuss the plan in Riyadh before presenting it at the Arab League summit.
