European leaders pledged to continue their joint support for Ukraine as it confronts Russian aggression at an emergency summit in Paris.
However, the meeting participants did not offer any new security guarantees that could change the situation amid US President Donald Trump's desire to start talks with Russia.
"I am ready to consider, along with others, the entry of British troops into the country if a lasting peace agreement is reached. A security guarantee from the US is the only way to effectively deter Russia from attacking Ukraine again," Starmer said at the end of an emergency summit in Paris.
"We must recognize that a new era has begun and not hopelessly cling to the comforts of the past. It is time to take responsibility for our security, for our continent," he said.
He stressed that the European peacekeeping force in Ukraine will need protection, particularly air defense, which only the US can provide.
