European leaders held an emergency summit in Paris. They discussed their next steps in response to the US President Donald Trump administration's intention to hold talks with Moscow without Europe's participation.
No concrete decisions were reported on the results of the meeting. Still, the EU and NATO noted the need to increase defense investments and provide reliable security guarantees to Ukraine.
The leaders of France, Britain, Germany, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Poland, and the Netherlands and representatives of NATO and the European Union participated in the talks.
"We are ready and eager. That is my impression from today's meeting in Paris. Europe is ready and willing to take a step forward. To take the initiative to provide security guarantees to Ukraine. We are ready to increase investments in our security significantly. The details still need to be clarified, but the obligations are clear," NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte wrote on the social network.
The same idea was also expressed by French President Emmanuel Macron, who organized the meeting in Paris. According to him, Europeans must invest "better, more and together" in the defense sector now and in the future.
"That is why Europeans want to accelerate the implementation of their program to ensure their sovereignty, security, and competitiveness. Based on the European Commission's proposals, work will continue in terms of support for Ukraine and development and investment in our defense," Macron said.
He also reported that after the talks in Paris, he had telephone conversations with the United States and Ukraine presidents Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky.
"We are striving to establish a stable and lasting peace in Ukraine," he said.
