Reuters reports that US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order encouraging the government and consumers to use plastic straws for drinking juice. Trump's predecessor, President Joe Biden, had proposed measures to reduce the use of single-use, non-biodegradable plastics that damage ecosystems and contaminate food.
"We're going back to plastic straws," Trump told reporters at the White House, noting that paper straws "don't work." "I don't think plastic will have a bad effect on sharks because they pave the way in the ocean," Trump said.
Trump also canceled the Biden administration's policy to eliminate single-use plastics in federal states by 2032.
