Syria may allow Russia to keep its bases, new defense minister says.
In an interview, former Syrian rebel leader Murhaf Abu Kasra spoke about the Damascus authorities’ moves to create new alliances.
“The Russian side will be able to keep the Hmeimim and Tartus military bases if it benefits Syria. If we benefit from it for Syria, then yes,” the minister said in an interview with The Washington Post.
According to him, Moscow’s attitude towards the new Syrian government has “improved significantly” since the resignation of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
The minister also noted that Damascus is discussing the possibility of a defense agreement with various countries.
