Greenland wants to hold a vote on independence

According to a statement on Thursday, Greenland’s ruling Siumut party plans to hold a referendum on independence after next month’s general election.

The issue has come into focus after U.S. President Donald Trump expressed interest in buying the island.

On Wednesday, the semi-autonomous territory, part of the Kingdom of Denmark, called a general election for March 11.

Greenland’s quest for independence and its relations under Trump with Denmark and the United States, which have repeatedly expressed a desire to acquire the strategically important island, have been central to the campaign.
