The motion of no confidence in the French government fails

The French parliament has rejected a motion of no confidence in the government, meaning that François Bayrou will remain prime minister.

The left-wing France Indépendant (LFI) party tabled the motion of no confidence. Just 128 deputies supported it, while a minimum of 289 votes were needed to pass. Other deputies did not participate in the ballot. A second motion was presented later and received 122 votes, even fewer than the first.

The LFI was not supported even by its coalition of left-wing parties, the largest faction in parliament. It does not have the majority of 289 votes.

François Bayrou has only been in office for two months. He was appointed by President Emmanuel Macron in December 2024, after the previous government's resignation, which was voted out of office by parliament after three months.
