Aliyev's plane encountered external technical interference in Russian airspace

The Azerbaijani Turan news agency reported that on December 25, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s plane lost its GPS signal in Russian airspace en route to St. Petersburg for an informal CIS summit.

“The Azerbaijani Ministry of Digital Development and Transport has admitted that Aliyev’s plane encountered external technical interference. The source wrote that the revelations come amid a growing investigation into the incident's circumstances, including reports of losing GPS signals over Russian airspace.

According to the news agency, Aliyev’s plane abruptly left Russian airspace and returned to Baku due to unexpected radio-technical problems.

“The similarities in the technical problems encountered by Aliyev’s and the crashed AZAL planes are striking, in particular, the loss of GPS signals over Russian-controlled airspace,” the agency wrote.

Analysts believe these incidents may be part of a broader geopolitical maneuver, especially given the recent tensions between Azerbaijan and Russia over regional issues.

“If Azerbaijan perceives these interventions as a direct threat to its sovereignty, this could lead to a review of its security strategy and possible changes in regional alliances,” the agency concluded.
