Crisis in Norway: Stoltenberg to become finance minister

The Norwegian NRK reports that Jens Stoltenberg, former NATO Secretary General and former Norwegian Prime Minister, will be appointed Minister of Finance.

The ruling Labor Party in Norway, which Stoltenberg led from 2002 to 2014, is currently experiencing a severe crisis.

Last week, the coalition government collapsed due to the party's position, which did not agree with the allies' energy policy or plans for closer ties with the EU. Eight out of 20 ministers, including the Minister of Finance, have left the government.

Stoltenberg's longtime ally, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, has promised to announce his new cabinet on February 4.

Støre had promised not to resign and to lead a minority government until the parliamentary elections, due by September 8 this year.

Stoltenberg's appointment to the cabinet, as a figure with authority in the country, could help correct the party's declining ratings.
