Trump suspends high tariffs on Mexico and Canada

Reuters reports that US President Donald Trump temporarily suspended high tariffs on Mexico and Canada, agreeing to a 30-day reprieve in exchange for their border security and crime control concessions.

Meanwhile, tariffs on China are set to take effect within hours.

In response to Trump's demands to crack down on illegal immigration and drug trafficking, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said they had agreed to strengthen border controls. The agreement will allow for a 30-day delay in imposing 25% tariffs, which were set to take effect on Tuesday.

Canada has agreed to introduce new technology and deploy additional personnel to the US border, as well as expand cooperation in the fight against organized crime, fentanyl trafficking, and money laundering.

Mexico has committed to deploying 10,000 National Guard troops to its northern border to curb illegal immigration and the flow of drugs.
