European Union leaders are meeting today to discuss how to strengthen the continent’s defenses against Russia and respond to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on goods imported from Canada, Mexico, and China.
The 27 leaders will also have lunch in Brussels with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
European Council President Antonio Costa called the one-day event an “external meeting” on defense policy, not a formal summit.
The first session will focus on geopolitics and relations with the United States. Trump is expected to take drastic measures to raise tariffs over the weekend. EU officials worry that Europe could soon face similar measures.
