Syrian state media reported that Ahmed al-Sharaa, Syria's de facto leader and leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, has been officially appointed as the country's interim president.
The new Syrian authorities have given Al-Sharaa the authority to form an interim legislative council until the country's new constitution is adopted.
His appointment was announced during a meeting in Damascus.
The new Syrian leadership also announced the dissolution of all armed groups, as well as the army and special services formed during the Assad regime.
According to reports, a new security structure will replace them. However, details about this have not yet been provided.
