New fires broke out in the suburbs of Los Angeles, this time spreading over 9,400 acres. Fueled by strong winds and dry brush, the fires forced the mandatory evacuation of more than 31,000 people.
Officials warned residents in the Castaic Lake area of Los Angeles County that they faced an "imminent threat to life." Meanwhile, an emergency fire warning remained in place for much of southern California due to strong and dry winds.
