Strong earthquake in Taiwan, 27 injured

On Tuesday morning, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 occurred in south Taiwan.

The Taiwan Meteorological Department said the epicenter was 38 kilometers southeast of Jiayi County, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The US Geological Survey downgraded the earthquake to a magnitude 6. Separate reports of minor and moderate damage were made in the cities of Jiayi and Tainan. Taiwan's fire service said 27 people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, including six people, including a one-month-old baby, who was rescued from a collapsed house in the Nanxi district of Tainan.

A bridge on a provincial highway was reportedly damaged, although rescuers are still assessing the damage.
