Donald Trump arrived at the White House on Monday for the first time as the 47th president of the United States and signed most of the previously promised executive orders in the Oval Office.
One of the first decrees was about pardoning hundreds of people who participated in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
"I hope that they will be released today. They are waiting for it—about 1,500 people," Trump said.
American media reporters later noted that Trump was wrong with this number. About 1,600 people were pardoned.
Trump also commuted the sentences of 14 members of the far-right groups, the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys, who were convicted of inciting insurgency and planning the attack.
A lawyer for Enrique Tario, one of the leaders of the Proud Boys, who is serving the longest sentence of 22 years, told CBS News that his client will likely be released soon.
The order also requires the US attorney general to close about 300 cases that are still pending in court.
