Lebanon has a new president after a two-year hiatus

Lebanon's parliament has elected army chief Joseph Aoun as president. Experts consider his candidacy the most likely because it favors almost all Lebanese forces, including Hezbollah.

Lebanon's presidency has been vacant for more than two years, and for a country weakened by years of economic crisis and a recent war with Israel, filling the power vacuum is now more critical than ever.

In Lebanon's complex community governance system, the post of president is traditionally held by Maronite Christians.
