Why does Trump need Greenland?

US President-elect Donald Trump has announced that the Greenland annexation deal, which Denmark strongly opposes, should be implemented and called for making the island "great again."

Later, at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago mansion, Trump said Denmark should cede Greenland to the United States to protect the "free world," including from ships from China and Russia, and did not rule out using military force on the island. To control.

Yesterday, Donald Trump Jr. arrived in the capital of Greenland, but the local authorities refused to meet him, calling the visit private.

Bloomberg singled out several reasons for the US president's interest in the island.

- Greenland controls strategic sea lanes on the North Atlantic and Arctic borders and popular air routes.

- In the region, there are vast reserves of essential minerals, which, in addition to the USA, are of interest to Russia and China, as well as large reserves of oil and gas.

- Greenland is home to the US's northernmost air base and radar station, which is used to detect missile threats and monitor space.

The intensity of Trump's statements is also strengthened by the fact that Greenland Prime Minister Mut Egede previously advocated independence from Denmark in his New Year's speech. However, he emphasized that he was not interested in joining the island to the USA.
