The Pope of Rome called for universal reconciliation in his Christmas message

Pope Francis delivered his annual Christmas message from St. Peter's Cathedral.

He condemned the "tough" humanitarian situation in Gaza and demanded the release of Israeli hostages who are still being held in the enclave.

The Pope also called for a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine and for easier access to humanitarian aid in famine-stricken Sudan.

Pilgrims have been standing in line since early morning today. To pass through the great "holy" door at the entrance to St. Peter's Basilica Security measures have been stepped up in the Vatican after the recent deadly attack at a Christmas market in Germany that killed five people.
