The US Geological Survey reported that the Kilauea volcano has become active and erupted. Activity continued throughout the day, but the eruption did not threaten residents.
The lava covered an area of about 2.6 km², and the explosions produced a strong emission of volcanic gases.
The volcano is under surveillance as the possibility of reactivation remains.
Kilauea's eruptions, which began in 1983, are considered one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
