The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic ceased to exist on January 1. On September 28, 2023, the last President of the country, Samvel Shahramanyan, signed a decree terminating the existence of the NKR, and state institutions were dissolved. Before that, however, NK was utterly depopulated.
Extraordinary presidential elections were held in Azerbaijan on February 7 (regular elections were scheduled for October 2025).
Presidential elections were also held in Russia. On March 17, Vladimir Putin officially assumed the post of President for the fifth time, collecting 87.28% of the votes.
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, announced that he is retiring early from his position. Michel's term was set to expire in November 2024, but he resigned in mid-July.
On April 23, general parliamentary elections were held in 13 states and two union territories of India. By the way, sometime after the first televised debate between Trump and Biden, the current President refused to participate in the elections, and Kamala Harris was nominated instead.
In the US presidential elections, Trump received 277 votes, Harris 226. Thus, Donald Trump became the 46th president of the country.
South Korea's parliament impeached President Yoon Seok-yeol for imposing martial law on December 3. Yoon's brief declaration sparked political chaos and widespread protests. However, martial law lasted only six hours, and Yun was forced to rescind the decision after the National Assembly unanimously voted against it.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his companions, including Foreign Minister Hossein Abdolahian, were killed in a helicopter crash in northwestern Iran. The high-ranking officials were returning from the opening ceremony of the hydro nodes on the Araks River, in which the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, took part.

The situation in the Middle East escalated sharply in 2023. On October 7, when Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip attacked peaceful Jewish settlements, this was the first Israeli attack on the center of Beirut amid the escalation of the situation in the Middle East. On September 27, as a result of a series of strikes in Beirut, Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Hezbollah group recognized as a terrorist organization by the United States, was killed. Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was also killed in Rafah, Gaza Strip, as a result of an Israeli army strike.
