US diplomats have started negotiations with the new Syrian authorities

According to the BBC, US diplomats are in Damascus, the capital of Syria, where they plan to meet with representatives of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group. Although this group currently controls Damascus, Washington still classifies it as a terrorist organization.

This is the first official American diplomatic visit to Damascus in the last decade.

The American delegation includes Assistant Secretary of State Barbara Leaf, US President Joe Biden's Ambassador for Hostages Roger Carstens, and Middle East Bureau Senior Advisor Daniel Rubinstein.
