Indian grandmaster Gukesh Dommaraju won the title of world chess champion yesterday.
In the 14th game of the World Chess Championship held in Singapore, he defeated the Chinese Ding Liren.
Gukesh Dommaraju is an 18-year-old Indian youth who became a grandmaster at 12. He is the third-youngest grandmaster in history. He won the gold medal on the first board as part of India's second team in the 2022 Chess Olympiad.
In 2023, Dommaraju became the youngest chess player to break the FIDE ranking of 2,750 points, ahead of former world champion Viswanathan Anand, India's strongest grandmaster for 37 years.
In 2024, Dommaraju was selected for the Contenders tournament, which he won by 9 points out of 14 points. The Indian set another record, becoming the youngest candidate. The chess player was not yet 18 at the tournament's end.
