The groups that came to power in Syria entered the city of Der Zor in the northeast of the country, which was under the control of the "Syrian Democratic Forces."
According to international media, Syrian government troops and Iranian-backed Iraqi forces left Der Zor, Syria's sixth most populous city and the administrative center of the province of the same name, before SDF members entered. Since 2017, the province has been half-Kurdish and Syrian under the control of government forces.
