The Financial Times reports that relatives of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad bought 19 apartments in Moscow from 2013 to 2019, the total value of which is estimated at 40 million dollars.
According to the publication, Assad's cousin Hafiz Makhlouf acquired 13 properties directly or through companies he controlled, and the wife of another cousin, Rami Makhlouf, purchased two apartments.
Four buildings are said to be used as apartments; one belongs to Assad's cousins, twin brothers Ihab and Iyad Makhlouf. Makhlouf owns a three-room apartment located a few minutes from Moscow.
According to the Financial Times, the transactions were mainly carried out by offshore companies listed as real estate owners.
Earlier, the press secretary of the Russian President, Dmitry Peskov, said that Vladimir Putin personally granted Asad and his family asylum in Russia.
