The spontaneous protest started in several Georgian cities after the country's Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, announced the freezing of negotiations on Georgia's EU membership until 2028.
Clashes took place between protesters and police in Tbilisi, and the situation continues to be tense. Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili joined the protesters gathered near the parliament building. She approached the security forces blocking the road leading to Freedom Square and asked, "Who do you serve?"
Sprinklers added to the large presence of the police at the entrances of the Parliament of Georgia.
