A nationalist candidate wins a surprise victory in the Romanian elections

After counting 99.94 percent of the votes, the well-known right-wing politician leads the results of the first round of the Romanian presidential elections with 22.91 percent, the CEC reported.

In second place is Elena Lasconi from the "Salvation of Romania" party (19.17 percent). The third result, 19.16 percent, is the result of the Social Democrat and Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Čolacu, for whom the exit poll predicted the victory of right-wing candidate George Simion with 13.87 percent of votes.

In total, 13 candidates took part in the elections. The second round is scheduled for December 8.

Calin Georgescu is a non-party candidate formerly in the far-right nationalist Alliance for the Unification of Romanians.

Marcel Çolacu is the current Prime Minister of Romania (since June 2023) and former President of the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Romanian Parliament.
