The former US president, Democrat Barack Obama, congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the elections, reports AFP.
Obama noted the importance of a peaceful transfer of power, "Obviously, this is not the result we were hoping for. But living in a democratic country also means accepting that our position will not always win and be ready to accept a peaceful power transfer."
During the pre-election campaign, Obama actively supported his Democratic Party colleague Kamala Harris and his wife, Michelle Obama.
