German Foreign Ministry spokesman Sebastian Fischer announced on October 30 that official Berlin is recalling its ambassador to Iran, Markus Potzel, "for consultations." The department's press service announced this.
Potzel delivered a note of protest to Iran's foreign minister and made a demarche regarding the death sentence of Jamshid Sharmahd, a political scientist of German-Iranian origin, after several years in prison.
On the same day, the German Foreign Ministry summoned the charge d'affaires of Iranian affairs to whom they expressed a "decisive protest" against the actions of the Iranian regime.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the execution a "scandal."
"Jamshid Sharmahdi was not even given a chance to defend himself against the charges brought against him in court," he stated.
Sharmahd was born in Tehran, spent his childhood in Germany, and lived most of his life in the USA. The man was mysteriously kidnapped and flown to Iran during a trip to Dubai, after which he was charged with terrorism.
