US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that the Georgian people accepted democracy yesterday.
"The dynamically developing democracy in Georgia has been a source of strength since 2004, and yesterday's participation shows the commitment of the Georgian people to democracy.
However, in 2024, international and local observers reported an election situation characterized by the ruling party's misuse of state resources, bribery, and voter intimidation. These led to unequal conditions and undermined public and international confidence in the possibility of fair elections.
Although international and local observers agreed that election day generally went well, we note reports of irregularities and sporadic violence. International observers did not call the results accessible and fair. We condemn all violations of international norms and join the calls of global and local observers to conduct a full investigation into all reports of election-related violations.
In the future, we call on Georgia's political leaders to respect the rule of law, abolish legislation that undermines fundamental freedoms, and jointly eliminate shortcomings in the electoral process. The goals of Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic integration, which are fixed by the country's constitution, require the government to respect the rights of civil society members and the fundamental freedoms of all citizens of Georgia.
